2013 Oscar Nominees: Best Picture

sam

Like all who care about the state of cinema, I have my frustrations and reservations about the Academy Awards, from the politics involved to the ridiculous voting system. And, well, the best picture of the year didn’t even get nominated for Best Picture this year (don’t get me started on that snub). Continue reading

My Top 20 Films of 2012

moonrisekingdom

As much as I love me some lists, especially as they relate to all things film, I also kind of despise lists—well, making lists that is. It may sound strange, but the process can be pretty frustrating and stressful. Plus, by the end of the year, there are usually 15-20 films that I have to catch up on within like a two-week window. Views on The Avengers

I have yet to see The Avengers. I didn’t review the film, so I skipped out on early press screenings to make time for other things. I think now, though, I’ll wait a week or two to let the buzz die down before heading to the theatre.

So far I’ve enjoyed reviews from Jaime N. Christley (Slant), A.O. Scott (The New York Times), Jeffrey Overstreet (Filmwell) and Armond White (City Arts).

Josh Hamilton and the Gospel

For those of you who don’t watch television, listen to the radio, read the news or interact with other human beings, superstar Josh Hamilton of the Texas Rangers fell off the wagon—again. The Oscars: Nostalgic for Hope

If one word defines the films of last year, it’s “nostalgia.” From a Paris train station in the 1930s to the Ohio suburbs in 1979, moviemakers and moviegoers alike wanted to be anywhere and everywhere else but 2011.

2012 Oscars Preview: Who Will Win, Who Should Win

I recently took part in an Oscars piece for Paste Magazine. Looking at all the different award categories, we shared what films we believed would win and what films we thought deserved to win.

More on the New Wes Anderson Film

Over a year ago, I blogged about news of a new film from Wes Anderson, Moonrise Kingdom. Now I’m excited to announce that both a release date and trailer have emerged.

The film will hit limited American theaters on May 25. Watch the trailer here.

For more on Anderson and his films, read this article by Armond White and watch this video essay series by Matt Zoller Seitz.

My Top 20 Films of 2010

In posting my top 20 films of 2011, I realized that I never posted my list from 2010. So I combed through the archives of my Gmail account, looking for a particular email and eventually found the list. Continue reading

My Top 20 Films of 2011

2011 marked yet another optimal year at the movies. It was the first year in several years that the Coen brothers didn’t give us something new, which felt like a tragedy given how spoiled we’ve become. Continue reading

Armond White and Jack and Jill

Armond White, former critic of The New York Press and now editor and critic at City Arts, has long been accused of being the worst film critic on the planet, as well as a troll and contrarian.
